WHAT IS RELAY FOR LIFE?
The Relay For Life movement is American Cancer Society’s signature fundraiser dedicated to helping communities attack cancer. From team members to volunteers, we all want to remember those we’ve lost, help those affected today, and give us a home team advantage against cancer. Through funds donated, time given, or awareness raised, our communities are teaming up to make a difference. When we rally together in the fight against cancer through this fun and inspirational event, we can accomplish anything.
One person can make a difference. In May 1985, Dr. Gordon “Gordy” Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Washington, raising money to help the American Cancer Society with the nation’s biggest health concern: cancer.
Gordy spent a grueling 24 hours circling the track at the University of Puget Sound. Friends, family, and patients watched and supported him as he walked and ran more than 83.6 miles and raised $27,000 through pledges to help save lives from cancer. As he circled the track, he thought of how he could get others to take part. He envisioned having teams participate in a 24-hour fundraising event. The next year, 19 teams were part of the first Relay For Life event at the historical Stadium Bowl and raised $33,000.
After previously battling stomach cancer, Gordy passed away from heart failure on August 3, 2014 at the age of 71. But his legacy lives on. He shaped an idea that started as one man walking and running a track and helped turn it into a global fundraising phenomenon.
1 out of 3 people in the US will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.
Help even the odds in the fight against cancer. The funds you raise through Relay For Life will not only honor survivors and remember loved ones, but also help give cancer patients and their families the resources they need, like free rides to chemo, free places to stay near hospitals, and a live 24/7 helpline for answers and support.
About the event venue - The Angora Hall
The show will take place at the Clarkston Community Center's Angora Hall. This main hall boasts vaulted ceilings with architecturally exposed beams, hardwood floors, and dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows. It is soaring, open and filled with light, yet has the charm and intimacy of its classic design.
This beautiful Hall will be set up with theater seating and accommodates 300 guests. Clarkston is located in DeKalb County, neighboring Decatur.
The Clarkston Community Center isn't always easy to find. The best way of finding the CCC is to use the following GPS coordinates 33°48'19.7"N 84°14'20.6"W or searching for the Clarkston Public Library. The CCC shares parking with the library. Another parking option is the overflow parking located right next to a church on the corner of Hill St and Roger St. (Please also refer to the map). Please do not park on Rogers St or Collage Ave.
